STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A state environmental group has lauded Assembly members Michael Cusick and Janele Hyer-Spencer for supporting five eco-friendly "super bills," including legislation on global warming, recycling and bottle deposits.
Cusick (D-Mid-Island) and Ms. Hyer-Spencer (D-East Shore/Brooklyn) were among 77 members of the Assembly to support bills advocated by the watchdog group, Environmental Advocates of New York.
Robert Moore, executive director of the group, said those who supported the measures "voted to protect New York's precious natural resources."
The bills included:
Global Warming Pollution Cap, to reduce the state's climate change pollution from all sources until total greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 80 percent by 2050.
Electronic Waste (E-waste) Recycling, to remove tons of such waste from landfills by requiring manufacturers to collect and recycle their products.
Environmental Access to Justice Act, to restore New Yorkers' right to enforce environmental review laws.
Wetlands Protection, to close the loophole in the law and give the state the authority to protect wetlands less than 12.4 acres in size.
An expansion of the bottle deposit law to include bottled waters. However, it is pending in federal court.
